Royal Mail Dispute - Lobby Of Parliament

CWU Headquarters thanks all those CWU  Branches and Field Officials who took part in the National Lobby on Parliament on Tuesday October 13th.  The Lobby was well attended and every effective.  It was the first lobby since the Summer Recess.

As was reported, each Labour Member of Parliament in the House of Commons has been sent a large A4 postcard.  They have also received a letter and DVD of the Labour Party Conference debate 2009.  Branches will receive the same.  Samples are attached to this LTB.

On Wednesday October 14th the following question was raised in the House:

Mr David Anderson (Blaydon) (Lab):  Does the Prime Minister agree that the best way to resolve the Royal Mail dispute would be to get the parties around the negotiating table?  If he does, will he tell Lords Young and Mandelson to start to concentrate on that and stop attacking the Communications Workers Union?

The Prime Minister:  We want a settlement of this dispute, and we want to say that this dispute is not in the interests of anybody.  I have to say that if Royal Mail starts to lose major contracts such as those of some of the major firms in this country, it will be difficult for it to regain those contracts over a short period of time.  I know that Ministers are working actively to ensure that the parties – in management and the work force – are negotiating.  I hope that they will do so, and I hope that this unnecessary strike can be prevented.
