North West Regional Secretary
Hi my name is Carl Webb and I am the North West Regional Secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU).
As the Regional Secretary I work directly to the General Secretary and have responsibility for overseeing the Regional Committees, branches, regional activists training, working with the media, liaising with ACAS, political & trade union activity and co-ordinating national/regional campaigns.
I also work very closely with the regional/divisional industrial officers assisting them during major disputes.
Regionally we are involved in a number of high profile campaigns i.e. Keep The Post Public, Agency Workers, The People’s Bank, Mail Centre Closures and campaigning against far right organisations.
The Government has announced plans to privatise Royal Mail; this not only threatens the Postal Industry but also the long standing relationship between the Labour Party and the CWU.
The Region is working hard to halt this privatisation and has vision of a publicly owned modern postal service that provides an improved service for all customers and decent terms and conditions and job security for postal workers.
Please sign our petition opposing the privitisation here
Ask your MP to sign Early Day Motion 428 opposing privatisation which has 125 signatures and rising.
We are presently campaigning for a People's Bank for the post office network which will serve both community and business needs.

Having won rights for agency workers at European level, we are now working hard to ensure that domestic legislation is brought in as soon as possible.
Working with the Divisional Officers we are attempting to convince Royal Mail to enter into meaningful negotiations on the future of the Mail Centers in the NW. MPs from all parties have signed an Early Day Motion calling on Royal Mail to cease its closure programme and to enter into negotiations with the CWU.
We believe that modernisation must be jointly managed in a way that not only leads to improvements in the services we provide to our customers but also provides postal workers with the best possible job security, terms and conditions. We reject the slash and burn approach of some Royal Mail managers under the guise of modernisation.
We aim to highlight all our ongoing campaigns and disputes via this website.
On occasions we will ask members and the public to actively support us this could be by attending rallies or writing and visiting your MPs. Never underestimate the influence that you have on our elected representatives.
We continue to improve our communications at Branch, Region and National levels and the setting up of this website is part of that process. We have made great strides and have become more professional in dealing with the media. We can never match our employers for resources but with the better use of IT we could do improve further.
I would encourage members to attend union meetings and take part in ballots whether that is locally or nationally.
It’s your union, have your say.
I would like to take the opportunity of thanking MPH, UIA and Simpson Millar for sponsoring this website and Chris Ingram of Oasis Health & Safety for doing a brilliant job designing and maintaining the site.
Many thanks
Carl Webb
